What is AI Citation?

An AI citation is when a generative AI engine names a specific page as the source for a claim in its generated answer — distinct from a mention (being referenced with no named source) or a click (a user actually visiting the page).

Citations are the outcome Generative Engine Optimization aims for, but GEO itself is the underlying set of content signals — factual support, original information, entity consistency, source credibility — that make a citation more likely. A brand can be mentioned inside a generated answer with no citation and no click at all, which is why citation tracking is measured as its own signal rather than inferred from website traffic.

Because citation behavior is controlled by each AI provider's own retrieval and synthesis process, and none of them publish exactly how a source gets selected, citation patterns are observed and tracked over time rather than fully predictable from any single content change.
